ILP PARTICIPATION

For this project, I will be interviewing a teacher from my hometown that I used to volunteer for, Ms. Staehle. Ms. Staehle uses technology in her classroom everyday, so I will be asking her a few questions about her use of technology and how she finds it beneficial in the classroom.

  1. What types of technology do you use in the classroom? 
Ms. Staehle- I mainly use applications and websites on the smartboard such as “On the spot Math” for math tutorial videos and brainpop junior. 
I also use an overhead projector to show the students instructions on how to do certain tasks. I have six computers along the back wall that students can use during centers or recess. Some websites and sources they use on the computers are IXL, Compass learning for both Math and English, and Reflex Math. 
  1. How do you feel about schools switching from paper based tests to computer based?
Ms. Staehle- Personally, I think that it is more beneficial to test on paper because some students feel more comfortable with paper based tests. Although, students these days are very familiar with computers and usually, computer based tests have lots of handy tools for test taking. 
  1. Do you think that technology is beneficial for students?
Ms. Staehle- I do think that technology is beneficial for students in an educational setting, because there are so many resources and websites out there that students can access that can benefit their education. 

  1. What types of technology do you use for grading and communication? 
Ms. Staehle- I input all my grades through Focus. Focus is really easy to use and parents have access to it so they can see their children’s progress. It’s really convenient to be able to email my coworkers and be able to communicate with the parents of my students from my computer. 
  1. How long have you been teaching and how has technology changed since you started teaching?

Ms. Staehle- This will be my 13th year teaching and technology sure has changed a lot. When I first started we did not have any computers in the classroom, everything was paper based. Over the next few years, computers were introduced along with so many different websites.

       The "flipped classroom" approach is when students are expected to learn material before class and be ready for discussion in class. An example of this is having a reading for homework and then talking about that reading and relating it to the learning objective in class the next day. I think that this is very effective and gives students a glimpse of what they are expected to know so that they are more prepared for class. This approach is used in almost all of my classes and I feel that I have benefited from it.        Open educational resources (OER) are resources that are free and open to the public to use for educational purposes. The link provided below shows an article that has a list of 16 OERs that teachers/students can use. There are numerous sites for OERs listed in this article that could be very helpful for teachers.       I really enjoy using Twitter for educational purposes. I have learned a lot about educational technology because I accounts that post about new technologies in the classroom. I also learn a lot from what my classmates tweet, because I see their ideas and opinions on information that they see or post about. The benefits of using Twitter is gaining more knowledge on the topic of educational technology outside of the classroom.      I learned a lot from the Web design project and I really enjoyed doing it. I learned how to navigate through Weebly and also how to make a website in the future. The only thing about Weebly that I did not like what that it was kind of difficult to use. Next time, I will add more designs and creative pictures to my website to make it stand out more.
